Cave Canem was founded by Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady with a mission to "cultivat[e] the artistic and professional growth of Black poets...[] by facilitating a nurturing space in which to learn, experiment, create, and present." Several Pitt faculty have participated in the Cave Canem fellowship, including managing director of the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics, Steffan Triplett.
