Pittsburgh Media Partnership Journalism Internship (Summer '24, paid)
Sector:
Nonprofit
Internship Category:
Summer
Description:

Due date: Monday February 26, 2024

The Pittsburgh Media Partnership seeks motivated student journalists for its Summer 2024 internship program.

PMP internships are intended to give students with a serious interest in a journalism career — particularly those who are underrepresented in the industry — an opportunity to learn on the job, improve their portfolio and leverage the experience so that they can break into the industry more easily after graduation.

Details regarding the program are available on Handshake, but students also can directly access the application by using this link: https://forms.gle/E7YjLgYjxTabaaVCA

Interns selected for the program will work in a local newsroom on day-to-day assignments with the editors of that organization. They will get access to additional fellowship, networking and learning opportunities. Last year, 11 interns were selected to participate in the program, and 10 Partnership outlets benefited from the interns’ contributions.

Candidates should be at least 18 and enrolled at a college-level institution. Recent graduates also are eligible to apply. All candidates must be able to live in the Pittsburgh area during the eight-week internship period, which begins in late May/early June and runs until late July/early August. Interns will earn $15 per hour for up to 30 hours a week.

For more information, please contact PMP Coordinator Frank Garland at fgarland@pointpark.edu and use PMP INTERNSHIP in the subject line.

Description:

Due date: Monday February 24, 2025, 5PM

Interested in learning key skills to help you break into the journalism industry more easily after graduation?

Next Generation Newsroom, a project of Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation, and newsrooms in the Pittsburgh Media Partnership -- a group of more than 30 media outlets in the greater Pittsburgh area -- seek motivated student journalists for the Summer 2025 Internship Program. This internship is intended to give students with a serious interest in a journalism career — particularly those who are underrepresented in the industry — an opportunity to learn on the job, improve their portfolio and leverage the experience so that they can break into the industry more easily after graduation.

Some of the interns selected for the program will work with Next Generation Newsroom, a news service that launched to fulfill the need for high-quality enterprise reporting for people who want to stay informed about the place they call home. The focus of NGN's work is government and enterprise reporting in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The stories that the Newsroom develops are shared across the 32 members of the Pittsburgh Media Partnership, which has a combined reach of more than 9 million.

Other interns will be placed in local PMP newsrooms and will work on day-to-day assignments with the editors of those organizations. Both NGN and PMP interns will get access to additional fellowship, networking, and learning opportunities. Interns will meet as a group each week to share their work and provide updates on how their internships are progressing.

The internship is paid at $15/hour, up to 30 hours a week. It will last 10 weeks between late May and early August 2025.

Internship Category:
Summer, Publishing
Description:

Due date: Friday April 4, 2025

Interested in working closely with literary agents to evaluate book proposals and manuscripts and interact with authors and editors?

The David Black Literary Agency is hiring part-time summer interns. Located in Downtown Brooklyn, we primarily represent non-fiction works with social, historical and political themes, along with sports biographies, cookbooks, memoir, and literary fiction. Projects we represent include THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN and TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE by Mitch Albom; SHRILL by Lindy West; OBAMA by Peter Souza; AND NOW WE HAVE EVERYTHING by Meaghan O’Connell; WHAT’S FOR DESSERT by Claire Saffitz; PRAYING FOR SHEETROCK by Melissa Fay Greene; INDIAN-ISH by Priya Krishna; KING by Jonathan Eig; BELICHICK by Ian O’Connor; and DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson.

Interns can work either in person or remotely, though we give preference to interns located in commuting distance of our office—ideally, student interns will live in New York City or nearby for the summer. Interns will be responsible for reading and responding to query letters, book proposals and manuscripts; they will work closely with agents to evaluate material and prospective clients. In addition to assisting with general office duties (i.e., filing, answering phones, etc.), interns will have the opportunity to work on research projects and interact with clients (authors) and editors. This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced office of several literary agents, and wise interns will work with and receive coaching from most of them.

Interns typically work 25-30 hours/week and are expected to work in our downtown Brooklyn office 2-3 days/week, with flexibility for a 4th remote day. They will be paid $17/hr, and the agency can accommodate any necessary paperwork for successful candidates to receive course credit for their internship, but this is not a requirement.

Application requirements:

  • Cover letter that includes: Major(s), Minor(s), Certificate(s), GPA, and expected graduation date, and your PeopleSoft ID #
  • Résumé

Please send application materials to engintern@pitt.edu by April 4, 2025.
