Biography

Beth Bateman Newborg holds a joint appointment as a senior lecturer in the English Department and in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE). In conjunction with the Swanson School of Engineering First-Year Program, she developed the First-Year Engineering Composition Program. Beth is Director of the Program, which The Program involved collaboration Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and the SSOE, and The Engineering Composition Program, which also involves collaboration with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences,  has received national and international attention, with invitations for faculty workshops and keynote conference talks in Peru, Abu Dhabi, Italy, Portugal, Russia, and Brazil.

In addition to directing the First-Year Engineering Composition Program, Beth teaches professional writing with an emphasis on science and technology and serves as Outreach Coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh Writing Center, As Outreach Coordinator, Beth gives talks and workshops on writing for all university departments schools, programs, centers, and offices. Beth is also the University of Pittsburgh composition consultant to the Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI).

Beth has been recipient of the English Department Distinguished Teaching Award and of two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards. Beth also writes poetry; Beth’s poetry has appeared in the Baltimore Review, About Place, Slipstream, Calyx, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
