Biography

Beth Bateman Newborg holds a joint appointment as a senior lecturer in the English Department and in the Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE). Beth was a co-developer and is Director of the First-Year Engineering Composition Program (FYECP), a unique, cross-disciplinary program that brings together SSOE and Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences faculty and resources to offer intensive science and engineering oriented composition courses to SSOE first-year students. The FYECP has received national and international attention, with invitations for faculty workshops and keynote conference talks in Peru, Abu Dhabi, Italy, Portugal, Russia, and Brazil.

In addition to directing the First-Year Engineering Composition Program, Beth teaches professional writing with an emphasis on science and technology and serves as Outreach Coordinator for the University of Pittsburgh Writing Center. As Outreach Coordinator, Beth gives talks and workshops on writing for all university departments schools, programs, centers, and offices. Beth is also the University of Pittsburgh composition consultant to the Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI).

Beth has been recipient of the English Department Distinguished Teaching Award and of two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards. Beth also writes poetry; Beth’s poetry has appeared in the Baltimore ReviewAbout PlaceSlipstreamCalyx, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
