I came to Pitt after working as an attorney in Kansas City and an English teacher in places like Riyadh, Shanghai and Hanoi.  My primary interest is the teaching of writing, particularly to first-year college students.  Lately, I’ve been thinking about philosopher William James, ethics, metaphysics, and how all of this might inform writing pedagogy.  Some other interests: economics and the university, the impact of digital media on cognition, Chinese rhetoric.
