TribLive.com, Western Pennsylvania’s most visited news website, hosts a funded summer internship for ambitious, enterprising students interested in journalism. The TribLIVE intern works alongside a dynamic team of award-winning journalists in Pittsburgh, Tarentum and Greensburg. The Trib was named Best Overall Newspaper four of the last five years by the Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The Trib's news platforms include two daily newspapers (Tribune-Review), 11 weeklies and TribLIVE.com, which receives more than 300 million pageviews a year. As a TribLive intern, you’ll have the opportunity to shadow reporters as they go about their days, whether in the courthouse or covering breaking news events. You will be given assignments to report and write several stories a week on various topics determined by your editor. The editor will work with you to sharpen your journalism skills such as interviewing techniques and how to search for public records. Applications for the summer program open in February, with a deadline in early March.

TribLIVE Journalism Internship (Summer '24, paid)

Western PA’s most visited news website, TribLIVE, is seeking an intern for Summer 2024. As a TribLive intern, you’ll have the opportunity to shadow reporters as they go about their days, whether in the courthouse or covering breaking news events. You will be given assignments to report and write several stories a week on various topics determined by your editor. The editor will work with you to sharpen your journalism skills such as interviewing techniques and how to search for public records. See attached document for full details and requirements.

This internship pays $15 an hour, funded by the Trib and a Pitt English Department Internship Grant. In order to receive funding, you must meet the eligibility requirements (see PDF).

WESA 90.5 Digital Internship

Internships are unpaid and candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program. Academic credit can be awarded based on mutual agreement between the intern's school and 90.5 WESA.

This internship site has a number of opportunities for students focused on science/environmental. They offer a variety of hands-on projects in areas such as plant ecology. The Conservancy is a nonprofit "dedicated to protecting the region's exceptional natural places." Of special interest is the Fawcett 10-week summer Digital Multimedia Communciations Internship. You would work at Fallngwater in Mill Run, PA, so would need transportation. Their main office is on Waterfront Drive in Pittsburgh and you can call them at 412-288-2777.

Western Pennsylvania Writing Project (WPWP)

The Western Pennsylvania Writing Project (WPWP) works to improve the teaching and learning of writing in schools and communities throughout Allegheny, Washington, Greene, Fayette, Westmoreland, Beaver, Lawrence, and Butler counties.  The Project engages teachers in their own writing and professional growth and increases opportunities for young people to develop their writing abilities. The WPWP is a site of the National Writing Project, a member of the Pennsylvania State Writing Project Network, and a program of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education. 
 

During the internship period, interns will write public-facing blog posts about the project and project’s history, work (organize, interview, and edit) on the WPWP at 40 digital storytelling initiatives, and manage the project’s social media presence.

The YWCA "empowers women and their families, advocates for fair and equitable conditions and challenges social and racial injustice". Examples of their programs include a women's resource center, child care, Keystone STARS, Homewood-Brighton Child Development and Education, youth services and STEM education, health and wellness, and a center for race and gender equity. Their headquarters are on Wood Street in downtown Pittsburgh. You can work with young people as a mentor but they also need people for research, writing, events, graphic design, social media, communications and development.
